Hahaha, sadly I know why this product exists (some problematic engineering on front-loading machines, at least), though I still have to agree with your assessment.
Really? Tell us more. 'Cause I always thought that when you were cleaning your clothes, it also kinda cleaned your machine - as though the cleaning of clothes left your washing machine dirty?
It reminds me of Tide's other new product called Tide, Stain Release. They advertise that it is the same stain fighting ingredient found in the detergent only concentrated, so you can add it to your lad of laundry. Why the heck don't they just amp up the detergent to start with instead of making the consumer buy another product just to make it work better? Must be why P&G is rolling in the dough and I'm not : )
Basically the machines can have a mildew/mold problem. I ended up with some Maytag HE machines, and after not too long they started producing really awful smelling clothes, and developed a ring of mold at the door gasket. I ended up in the quandary you describe of cleaning my washing machine, heh heh. Used bleach.
